Education & Charity
Amin Babor Chowdhury, originally from Kulaura of Sylhet, Bangladesh, came to the UK in 2007. He has since become an established public figure in the North West of England through his passion, dedication and work ethic, to develop and enhance community relations within the diverse cultural groups of Greater Manchester.
He has established himself in the journalism, education and charity sectors to promote community cohesion and advance prospects for many groups.
In 2009, he helped to launch The Probash Bangla Newspaper in Oldham, one of the UK’s few English-Bengali publications, which gives a voice to the UK Bangladeshi community and creates a plat- form to connect the young and older generations.
Through sheer determination and optimism, Amin has created strong links with prominent figures in local and central government, and with education and business leaders, engaging with them on important issues and gaining support for many of his projects. Amin is married with three young children and lives in Oldham. He seeks to advance, celebrate and promote his chosen causes however he can. He set up One Community UK (OCUK) in 2012, which has charitable aims through which he organises community events and was able to establish the Oldham Education Awards (OEA) in 2012.
OEA unifies the whole town in celebration of the academic achievements of students in the borough. Around 250 young people have received an OEA. Because of his contributions, Amin was invited to
become an Ambassador and Board member at the Oldham Academy North School.
He is heavily involved in fundraising and promotional activities for charities, including Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, Kingfisher Special School, Tameside Rotary, Local Mayor’s Fund, Just Help Foundation, Global Relief Trust and 1Care charity, which works to improve health care and education in rural Bangladesh. He also supports The Prince’s Trust because of the life-changing work it does with vulnerable young people.
In 2021, he organised the first hundred-mile walk during Ramadan in aid of charity and raised funds for various charities. In 2022, he also managed a 100-mile (walk/run) challenge during Ramadan to raise funds for three different charities. More recently, he also or- ganised a charity dinner in aid of the relief efforts in Bangladesh. In 2013, he endeavoured to unite all the people of the United King- dom in celebration of education, as one community.

He achieved this vision in January 2017 when students and their families, education professionals and politicians travelled from Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England to attend the country’s inaugural British Education Awards (BEA) in London. His aim now is to keep raising the profile of BEA and bring the event to every part of the UK, and continue to inspire people in the pursuit of education.
In 2018 he was also invited to become a governor of Kingfisher school which is a special needs school for pupils aged 2-19, aiming to meet the needs of pupils with severe and complex physical and/or learning difficulties.
Amin is also passionate about Cricket. He created links and opportunities between community cricket clubs and mainstream organi- sations such as Lancashire Cricket Club/Foundation. In the 2019 Cricket, world cup Amin volunteered for the International Cricket Council (ICC). In 2021, he played an important role in supporting the COVID vaccination programme for the Royal Voluntary Service. He also worked as an honorary steward at the 2022 Common games in Birmingham.
