In the bustling business landscape of the United States, Bilal Chowdhury stands out as a beacon of success for Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRBs). A proud son of Sylhet, Chowdhury has dedicated over two decades of his life to the seafood import and distribution industry, currently serving as the CEO and President of Four Star Import & Distribution Inc. in New York. Since taking the helm in 2009, he has transformed his company into a key player in the dry and frozen food market, specializing in tiger shrimp and basmati rice, and establishing fruitful partnerships with chain supermarkets and food industries across the nation.
Mr. Chowdhury has expanded his business expertise beyond global seafood and commodities trade to establish a prominent real estate investment portfolio throughout New York. Specializing in bank-owned (REO) and estate properties, his company buys, renovates, and sells over 200 houses annually. With a sharp eye for undervalued assets and a commitment to strategic property enhancements, Mr. Chowdhury has become a recognized force in New York real estate. His ventures reflect a dynamic approach, blending his international business acumen with a strong presence in the U.S. real estate market, and driving consistent growth and high-value property transactions.
Bilal’s journey is not merely one of personal success; he serves as a role model for the new generation of Bangladeshi-Americans. His entrepreneurial spirit is matched by his commitment to uplifting his community. Recognizing the challenges faced by fellow Bangladeshi businessmen, he founded the American Bangladeshi Business Alliance (ABBA), a platform designed to support and empower entrepreneurs. Under his leadership as Founding President, ABBA has successfully conducted 11 business summits, attracting high-ranking dignitaries, including finance and foreign ministers, as well as leaders from the FBCCI and BGMEA. One of ABBA’s crowning achievements was signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the FBCCI, which has strengthened ties between Bangladeshi businesses and their counterparts in the U.S.
Bilal Chowdhury’s academic journey laid the foundation for his professional endeavors. A diligent student, he completed his SSC at Ismoti High School in 1992 and later pursued higher education in Computerized Accounting in New York. Even while studying, he ventured into business to secure a dignified living, ultimately founding his own import and food distribution company in 2009. This bold step was driven by his belief that entrepreneurship carries inherent risks but also the potential for greater rewards.
Chowdhury’s philosophy extends beyond business; he believes industry plays a crucial role in societal development and can transform lives. He embodies the idea that genuine effort and steadfast dedication lead to success. Humble, friendly, and passionate, Bilal has also made significant contributions as an organizer and investor, particularly in the real estate sector, where he aims to assist immigrants, especially those from Bangladesh.
Sports and faith are important aspects of Bilal’s life; he integrates the teachings of the Holy Quran into his daily routine. He chairs the Better World Foundation, a voluntary organization based in Sylhet, Bangladesh, where he actively engages in social service activities, viewing them as a form of prayer. His belief that helping others is a way to honor the creation of Allah drives his philanthropic efforts.
During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bilal stepped up to provide essential food supplies to those in need, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to community support. Reflecting on the development of Bangladesh, he expresses confidence in the country’s potential, emphasizing the importance of honesty and loyalty in utilizing its vast resources and manpower. He takes pride in Bangladesh’s transition to a middle-income country and advocates for strong actions against corruption, believing that collective efforts from both the government and opposition are essential for national progress.
In a world where success is often measured by personal gain, Bilal Chowdhury’s story shines as a testament to the power of community, compassion, and commitment to uplift others. His journey is a source of inspiration for many, proving that with vision and determination, one can not only achieve personal dreams but also pave the way for the success of an entire community.
